(Historical note- This letterhead is directly from the most famous address in N.Y.C., (June 25, 1872–October 4, 1936) served as the American ambassador to France from 1933 to 1936. He was the eldest son of
    Isidor Straus

    Nathan Straus

    R.H. Macy & Co.
    His uncle
    Oscar Solomon Straus
(1850–1926) was the first Jewish United States Cabinet Secretary, serving as Secretary of Commerce and Labor from 1906 to 1909. Roosevelt appointed him Chairman of the state's Temporary Emergency Relief Administration (TERA), which provided unemployment assistance to ten percent of New York's families, in 1931.)
    Jesse Isidor Straus
(June 25, 1872 – October 4, 1936) served as the American ambassador to France from 1933 to 1936. He was the eldest son of Isador Straus (1845–1912), who died in the sinking of the RMS Titanic, co-owner with his brother Nathan Straus of the department store R.H. Macy &Co.
    .
His uncle Oscar Solomon Straus  (1850–1926) was the first Jewish United States Cabinet Secretary, serving as Secretary of Commerce and Labor from 1906 to 1909.
    Life and career
Jesse Straus was born in Gutenburg,Germany. In 1879,he moved the United States to live in New York City. He graduated from Harvard College  in 1893. He and his brothers Percy and Herbert, both also Harvard graduates, donated funds that built Straus Hall  in Harvard Yard.
After college Jesse Straus was made to gain outside business experience before joining the family business. He worked as a clerk at the Hanover National Bank for a year and a half and then for a similar period as a department store salesman at Abraham & Straus, a Macy's rival. He married Irma Nathan in 1895. He began working at Macy's on September 3, 1896.
In 1929, he purchased a piece of land on New York City's Park Avenue to construct an apartment building because he found that the better buildings in the area would not accept Jews as residents. He moved his family into the topmost two floors, a seven-bedroom duplex with terraces, a thousand-square-foot library, and a baronial stone fireplace.
A political ally of New York Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt, in March 1931 Jesse Straus funded a poll of the delegates to the 1928 Democratic Convention to assess Roosevelt's chances in the race for the 1932 Democratic presidential nomination. Straus was president of his family's department store in the 1930s until Roosevelt appointed him Chairman of the state's Temporary Emergency Relief Administration (TERA), which provided unemployment assistance to ten percent of New York's families, in 1931.
When Roosevelt took office and the public anticipated a run on the banks, he bought full-page newspaper advertisements that announced:
    I trust my government.
    I trust our banks.
I do not expect the impossible.
I shall do nothing hysterical. If it is normal to carry little cash in my pocket when there is plenty to go round, I shall carry little now. There never was a time when everyone on earth could possess all his cash in is pockets, his socks, his safe-deposit box, or anywhere else.
I will not stampede. I will not lose nerve. I will keep my head.
Roosevelt appointed him U.S. Ambassador to France in 1933 and he presented his credentials in Paris on June 8, 1933. He served in that office, returning to the U.S. several times for health care, until he resigned for health reasons on August 18, 1936. He was fluent in French and was the first Jew to serve in the position. He reported to the President that public morale there was low and the country was unprepared for war.
In the 1930s he warned against efforts on the part of American Jews to organize opposition to the Nazi regime in Germany in the belief that is was "stirring up trouble" on an issue in which their involvement only demonstrated their inability to integrate themselves fully into American life. According to a biography in the Straus family newsletter, he "felt that Judaism was a religion, not a nationality, and that Jews, and members of all religious groups in any country, should assimilate....He refused all traffic with the Zionists and rigidly opposed pro-Jewish discrimination at Macy's."
He was one of the founders of the Lycée français de New York.
He died of pneumonia at his home at 720 Park Avenue in New York City on October 5, 1936. He is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx, New York.
In response to New Deal legislation increasing estate taxes to 60%, he had distributed some of his assets and revised his will.
    Time
called his actions a "protest" and the result of "troubled thought." First he gave away one fourth of his Macy's stock, paying far less tax than had the shares remained part of his estate. Then, On July 31, 1934, he revised his 1933 will to remove a list of gifts to 18 educational and charitable institutions because:
The present Federal and State estate tax laws impose substantially increased tax burdens upon the estates of decedents and may under certain conditions cause undue hardship and financial sacrifice and loss resulting from untimely sale and liquidation of assets of estates to provide for the payment of such taxes. The increased estate taxes upon the estates of decedents are devoted in large part to Governmental social programs. Under the circumstances now existing, I deem it advisable to cancel and revoke the bequests made by me...in my [earlier] last will and testament.
His widow died in 1970 at the age of 94.
Straus was a noteworthy collector of fine arts and memorabilia. He left a collection of autographs to his granddaughter, who donated them to Vassar College, where they form the Jesse Isidor Straus Autograph Collection (ca. 1727-1873).
New York City's PS 199, the Jesse Isadore Straus School on West 70 Street, is named for him.

INFO ON THE HONORABLE BAINBRIDGE COLBY
Up for auction are the items shown in the scans.  The Honorable Bainbridge Colby- (Woodrow Wilsons last Secretary of State and Mark Twains lawyer, as well as the man who ratified the 19th amendment which gave woman the right to vote !!!, I have seen on the net that Mr. Colbys autograph alone has sold for between .00 and .00. And since carbon relies of the era did not come with signatures I have decided to add a check and signature so as to add a direct provenance to your acquisition. . He was a gentleman who helped shape the U.S. Political foreign affairs during the 1920's - 1940's. I grew up in his hometown and the caretaker for the family estate called Little Brook Farm, at Sunset Bay, near Bemus Point. The Colby family farms caretaker after Mr. Colbys death in 1950 and Mrs. Colbys death in 1963 was my Sunday school teacher (Mr Sydney Taylor) in the Maple Springs Interdenominational church from when I moved there in 1964 until his death in 1967. Us kids would walk Mr. Taylor home several miles each Sunday after church through the beautiful woods that later became Long State Park after Mr. Taylor passed away and we would help him in his duties of cleaning up the property and my father would haul the truckloads of junk we piled up every few weeks to the Ellery Center Dump which is when I kept a couple small boxes of the stuff and carried around until I began to research it this past two years. I just kick myself now realizing that we must have thrown away several tons of paperwork and old books that were most probably filled with original mark Twain items and other significant words of men and womans gifts, books, manuscripts that today would be a treasure of Americana history. I just thank God that Mr. Taylor told me to save the little bit.

Shipping/ Handling / Coverage Information (Important to read!!)
We adhere very strictly to all of eBays Policies and Rules so please read and understand all of the Auction Houses rules prior to bidding!  These policies are in place to protect bothe the sellers as well as the buyers rights and financial information, as well as keeping frauds and “rippers” from ruining our Auction experiences.  The following are just some of the basic rules that apply to all of our auctions and we highly recommend that you familiarize yourself with all of them.
We ship only via U.S.P.S FLAT RATE SERVICES to assure an equitable and fair cost to everyone in the 50 United States.
We believe that everyone needs to start somewhere so we welcome new eBayers, or a buyer who may have had a bad incident (but not repeat offenders).
We practice trustworthy feedback policies for both buyers and sellers. Our expectations are simple, from sellers we expect clear scans, fast response to questions, & good packaging. From buyers we offer great scans, 7 day auctions to give you time to ask all questions &for more scans (please do these requests within the first 3 days of the auction to give us time to respond properly), we expect you to understand that auction items we sell are one of a kind and irreplaceable and therefore the sale is final unless for the obvious reasons stated clearly in our return policies. If we do discuss an issue and decide to offer a refund the buyer is responsible for the return shipping/H/IC and the item must be in the exact condition we sent it (damage due to shipping is dealt with as per return policies). Return payment will not be paid until receipt of the returned product in its original condition!!
We DO NOT SHIP TO ANY ADDRESS OUTSIDE THE 50 UNITED STATES !!! No Exceptions !!!
INFORMATION ON USPS POLICIES AND RETURNS !!!
Again we follow all of eBays policies and regulations and highly recommend that you ask all questions before bidding if you are a new eBayer !!
You cannot be “to educated…” when buying online so we offer as much information as possible to help new ebayers as well as old ones. Below are a lot of issues we have already discussed but we want to impress them upon everyone who is a small time buyer/seller in this great program !!!
eBay can not be held responsible as if they are parents so we all must be aware of policies of the shipping services as well as each other
ALL ITEMS/Documents WILL BE SHIPPED VIA U.S.P.S FLAT RATE !!! (either envelope of box depending on size !!!)
If you have any questions or want specific photos from specific views I have not posted “Please” ask all questions prior to bidding.
We aspire to provide our buyers with great service and will always ship within 3 business days from the date of the processed PayPal payment,
Not from the date of the sale
    !!!
However if the sale ends on a Friday we will ship the following Monday as we are over 20 miles from a post office that provides weekend service.
If the following Monday (or Tuesday) are holidays we cannot control that and will ship the first date we can.
This is a rare situation and we try very hard to ship by the 3
    rd
day “AFTER” payment is received via PayPal.
Also PayPal is the only payment plan we accept so please be aware of that!!!
YOU MUST OPEN  your package if there is obvious damage to it in front of a postal employee (your postman) or you will void the USPS & our return policy !!!
OUR PERSONAL EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES RETURN POLICY FOR OUR CUSTOMERS –
(Although we list item as no returns accepted we do understand that under certain extenuating personal circumstances or an inadvertent error in shipping may occur and
we as honest sellers understand this and we will always consider these issues that may arise to help out our customers.
Our basic policies are similar to which eBay already offers (for a fraudulent listing of an item not sent as described). However we also understand that due to the economy and due to some personal emergencies people simply have emergencies beyond their control and we sympathize with these situations. So under these circumstances we offer the buyer the opportunity to contact us immediately before we send the item (preferably) and explain why you need to cancel the purchase.
    1) only if item is not as described in our auction. And as our clear scans show! Our auctions are for used/vintage or antique items and our scans and descriptions define any defects in the item and we happily will answer questions or supply more photos prior to bidding!!
    2) Buyer must use the same S/H/IC and packaging as it was sent and item must be in the same condition.
    3) Any damage due to shipping is covered however buyer must utilize the provided coverage plan (please do not just ship item back and expect us to issue a refund).   MUST open obvious damaged packages in front of USPS employee to receive their coverage !!
    4) Damaged items/packages must be opened within your local USPS office in front of USPS employee, as resending it to us voids out the coverage and as sellers we lose the item (as well as the sale).
That is why we try to "insist.." buyers (as we have learnt from experience) to open an obviously damaged box in front of a USPS employee for immediate verification of any potential damages that may have occurred due to improper handling of your purchase.
    5) We truly package well to limit any breakage, but extenuating situations, such as damages due to shipping.
S/H/IC (we will cover the extra cost out of our sales price to make sure the item is fully covered)!!! PLEASE remember that the 3 day shipping guarantee is from the time and date of your PayPal payment and not from the Date of the sale!!!!! We cannot guarantee a shipping date “until...” the full payment has been processed!!!
Mahalo nui loa for doing business with our small ohana and we hope you are pleased with your purchase as we have held these items since my early childhood and they are as dear to my heart as I hope they become to your family. Have a wonderful day and enjoy your eBay experience...... Rev. Miller
